Revere Bank Supports Ellicott City Partnership
June 11, 2018
Revere Bank will support the Ellicott City Partnership during its monthly jean day fundraiser. After donating $5 to support a local charity, Revere Bank employees can wear jeans to work on the fourth Friday of each month. This month, employees’ donations will help the Ellicott City Partnership further its mission of preserving the life and heritage of Ellicott City while stimulating the town’s economic growth. The jean day fundraiser will contribute to the Ellicott City Partnership’s Flood Relief Program, which aims to provide relief and recovery efforts in response to the town’s flood on May 27.

After a devastating flood occurred in July 2016, the Ellicott City Partnership received significant funds to repair damages in the historic district, and it administered five relief programs to residents, households, businesses and property owners. Through these initiatives, the Elliott City Partnership has been striving to restore and enhance Ellicott City’s town and community since it was founded in 2013. How to boost your metabolism and stave off those pounds
Are you having a hard time losing those last few pounds? Before you throw in the towel, your metabolism might be the obstacle in your way. The metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories and converts fuel to energy, which affects how much weight you gain or lose. Other factors, like genetics, age, gender and body size all determine how quickly your metabolism works, but you can make small changes to your daily routine that rev up the fat burning process.

Fuel your mornings

Although skipping breakfast might save you time in the morning, your metabolism will be crying out for help. Eating something first thing in the morning will jumpstart your metabolism and give you a boost of energy that will set the pace for the rest of your day. By eating breakfast, your blood sugar levels will stabilize, so you will be less likely to get those midnight munchies! Eating breakfast can increase your resting metabolism up to 10 percent, so make time for breakfast.

Find your physical

Start getting physically active to get a more active metabolism! Cardio, like running, walking, or riding your bike, increases the flow of oxygen to your muscles, which helps eliminate body fat. Not only will you fire up your metabolism during your workout, but your metabolism will continue to stay elevated afterwards, even with your feet up.

Make muscle gains

To supplement your cardio workout add some weight lifting to your regime. When you build muscle mass, your body will burn calories at a higher rate. One pound of muscle burns up to nine times the amount of calories that a pound of fat burns. After your strength training session, your metabolism will remain in overdrive for up to two hours. You’ll be looking leaner from lifting in no time!

Drink green

Drink your way to health with green tea, an antioxidant powerhouse. Green tea contains an active ingredient called catechin which improves your metabolism and helps you zap away fat. By increasing how your body burns stored energy (called thermogenesis by the way), stimulating the nervous system and amplifying fat oxidation, green tea can help you burn calories at a faster rate.

Say “Yes, please” to Omega-3s

They’re called essential fatty acids for a reason. Omega-3s found in salmon, herring, tuna, walnuts and flaxseeds balance blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation, which keep your metabolism constantly churning. By including this nutrient into your diet, you will also reduce resistance to leptin, a hormone that regulates your energy balance and controls hunger. You are what you eat, so eat some Omega-3s to look great and feel even better.
Five ways to stay on track this holiday season
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! But it’s also a time of endless partying, eating, drinking and shopping that can easily wreck havoc on your health. With never-ending to-do-lists and constant indulgences, you might feel wiped out before you start celebrating. Instead of letting the stress of the season prevent you from truly enjoying this time of family, friends and festivities, here are a few health tips to keep you smiling with energy throughout the holiday. You can have yourself a merry little Christmas — and a healthy one too!

1. Eat your greens

Christmas trees shouldn’t be the only green objects in your sight during the holidays! Fill your plate with an abundance of green vegetables to get your fair share of water, fibre and nutrients. These vegetables will rid your body of toxins from that piece of figgy pudding. The fibre in these nutritious powerhouses will keep you fuller longer, so you will be less likely to reach for that second piece of pie. Don’t beat yourself up for treating yourself to a delectable dessert, but remember to balance it out with some greens!
2. Stay active

The best gift of all isn’t wrapped underneath the tree. It’s wrapping yourself up in the presence of friends and family. Spend time with your friends and family in a more active way. Take a stroll to see the neighborhood’s Christmas lights with your family. Try ice skating at a nearby rink or do some last minute shopping, which will certainly keep you trim.
3. Find time to unwind

In the midst of Christmas preparations, it’s easy to feel like your energy is zapped. Instead of crashing on the couch and missing out on all of the fun, make your days merry and bright by taking a few minutes of alone time. Focus on taking deep breaths so that you are more aware of the present and are able to relax your body and mind. You will increase your energy, improve your mood and appreciate everything around you.

4. Get a good night’s sleep

Aim for beauty sleep, or as close to eight hours as you can. When you get less sleep than your body needs, you will lose your smile and struggle to keep focused. Sleep deprivation means feeling lethargic, moody, irritable and unable to concentrate. Too little sleep means your cortisol levels will increase, which leads to elevated body fat storage and more cravings for Christmas cookies. Enjoy the parties, but make sure you leave with enough time to get that beauty sleep.

5. Beat the germs

Cold weather doesn’t just mean sleigh rides and snow angels. As the temperature decreases, your body becomes more susceptible to viruses and bacteria. Rather than spending Christmas with a box of tissues, take preventative measures by keeping a hand sanitizer in your bag, washing your hands thoroughly and staying warm.
Cheers to a healthy season.
