Megan Roup’s vivacious energy, chiseled abs and fun choreography have been all over Instagram recently. Since we’ve all spent the past eight months riding out the pandemic from our homes, many of us have been looking for exciting ways to stay active. Megan Roup and her method of dance cardio workouts combined with bodyweight moves using light weights and sliders have certainly had a large appeal. From A-list celebrities to long and lean Victoria’s Secret models, everyone who is anyone seems to swear by her method.
In 2017, the former professional dancer fused her background in dance with her passion for movement to create The Sculpt Society. Through classes at Equinox and Studio B Bandier in New York City, her collaboration with Obé Fitness and her very own app, the fitness trainer shares fun, simple and effective choreography that makes dance accessible to all.
I’m a huge proponent of any workout that emphasizes feeling amazing in your skin rather than changing your body to fit a certain mold, so I decided to hop on the bandwagon and try out one of her highly esteemed sculpting workouts.
While browsing through The Sculpt Society workouts on YouTube, a 14-minute sculpting series that targets the booty caught my eye. Maybe it was the brightly colored background that epitomizes Obé Fitness or the concept of a time-efficient workout, but I quickly pressed play and got to work.
The workout consisted of three combinations of exercises on the mat that targeted the glutes, hamstrings, hips and thighs. I started on the right leg and completed each combo twice, which included a series of moves like donkey kicks and leg lifts, before moving onto the next combo and repeating it all over again on the left leg.
Every move worked tiny muscles and multiple angles, so my entire leg was burning throughout the workout. It took everything in me not to collapse on the floor in need of sweet relief, so it was a mental challenge as much as a physical one. The sculpting series felt like a full-body workout because I relied on my core and arms to stabilize and support me while I kicked and lifted, so my whole body was aching by the end.
In just 14 minutes, I was dripping sweat. Since the workout required completing a handful of exercises back-to-back with minimal rest, my blood was pumping and my heart was beating rapidly. Every exercise was low-impact, but since you followed each move to the beat of a spunky playlist, it had a dance cardio element that sculpted and toned at the same time.
Megan’s positive energy and creative choreography motivated me to push to the finish line. I felt so invigorated and recharged after exercising with the fabulous trainer, and I can totally see why she has attracted such a following. She actually makes working out fun.
